Jim, like many many people today I'm little familiar with the social history and myth of the "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" letter. It's refrain is popular enough but the history surrounding it is vague. Well, no more. I've just read your reproduction of the New York Sun editorial and I am better off for it on two accounts. First, I have learned something today about cultural history and so I am now a little smarter today than yesterday. More importantly, Francis P. Church's entire reply touched me tremendously. Instantly, his words connected and reminded me of the importance of the season. Now understanding the context within which that famous reply was made I more appreciate the sentiment behind little Virgina's question. And it is the question of the ages - then and now - that speaks to all of our hearts and need for reassurance. Church's reply is simply brilliant! Thank you Jim for reprinting this letter. Merry Christmas to you and yours.

My sermon tomorrow (12/24) is titled "Dear Santa" and focuses on the series of letters a girl writes to Santa Claus, beginning in early childhood and ending with her husband's death ("off stage" in the sense that it's never specifically mentioned), leading into Luke's account of Christ's birth. In preparation, Santa himself will be visiting during the children's sermon - an opportunity for me to introduce his historical religious background. I found your site in the midst of some last minute research and appreciate the opportunity to reread the familiar Sun editorial. Thank you and may you all have a blessed Christmas.

Yesterday's edition of our local newspaper contained a letter from an 11 year old girl expressing her doubts about Santa Claus. Of course it reminded me of the "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" editorial and I wanted to send a copy to her. Thanks to your website, she will have her reassurance shortly. May you and your many visitors have a Merry Christmas.

I enjoyed your site very much and a fan of "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus"... I thought you might enjoy a modern twist. I have a 7 year old daughter whom, as Virginia, was informed by a fellow classmate that Santa Claus did not exist. She Questioned me about the matter and I like most parents tried to give a vague but truthful answer. To my surprise she decided to go to the source itself, Santa. As she asked him is real, is answer to her was a modern renditon of the famous editorial. Just because you cannot see something with your eyes does not mean that it does not exist, for you cannot see God, yet you believe, You may not see the air yet you know it is there. If you have a faith in something, or anything then the magic of its existance can be so. Not only did this renew and erase the doubts in a child but it reminded my husband and I of the mystical power of the holidays. To you and yours I hope you have a Joyous holiday and many happy years to come . Thankyou again for putting such a wonderful reminder of this holiday season for all to read and share. Sincerely,
Nicole Elliott

I needed to find this story for my daughter, she is questioning santa. My dad read this to me every Christmas when I was young and now it's time for me to start with mine. Thank you for bringing back a tradition.

Thank you so much for reproducing "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus"'. It must rate as one of the best examples of the meaning of Christmas. You might care to revisit another American's views on Christmas. Clement Moore's 'A Visit From St Nicholas' or subtitled 'Twas the night before Christmas'. Once again thank you and my kind regards and best wishes to your family for the holiday season.

Every year I read "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" to my daughter who is now 12. There hasnt been one year that I have been able to make it all the way through it without shedding some tears. This is what Christmas is all about > love, compassion, hope. This is going to be a tough Christmas for my daughter (Lorena) because her Dad and I are divorcing and he refuses to pay child support. But, you know, just maybe Santa IS real and we will have a good Christmas after all! Thanks for the website.
